Launched in 2008, Matakana Tours is a small business run by Liz, Geoff & the Bays family. Living in Warkworth, the family has a passion for connecting visitors with local kiwis amidst their beloved backyard – the Matakana Coast. Committed to the local economy, Geoff and Liz love sharing their quintessentially kiwi lifestyle with others. They also own Warkworth Lodge, which offers vintage-style accommodation.
Matakana Tours flagship product – the Food & Wine Tour – initially began from Geoff’s love for the local, boutique wine the region produces along with the idea to introduce these unique wines (and the people that crafted them) to visitors. After growing in popularity, the Taste Tour was born where visitors are able to indulge in the bounty of fresh produce and artisan suppliers of the region. Many of these local growers and artisans are friends of Liz and Geoff themselves. People often say that they feel they’ve made a bunch of new friends after a day on tour – and it’s those authentic, personal connections that make our experiences so special.
More recently, Liz developed an exciting, hands-on touring range for corporates and ladies so that days can be customised to suit the groups interests, budget and time. However she’s most excited about the Wellness Weekend experience, which is brand-new in 2017. This has been crafted for busy working women looking for time out for themselves and ways they can live healthier lifestyles.
A busy mother of 3, Liz is very active within the local community, being a part of the regional Matakana Coast Tourism Group since its inception as well as being an active member of Warkworth’s business association for the past seven years.
With over 50 local suppliers, it’s clear how committed the family is to buying local. Guests love gaining insights into these authentically kiwi businesses, be it wine, honey, handmade chocolates or oysters. Our tours only visit the Matakana Coast region, just 45 mins north of Auckland City. Guests often comment how little time they spent in the car – because we’ve got such a bounty of vineyards, producers and artisans here, there’s less time driving and more time exploring and having fun – just how we like it!
We can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself on tour.
